The Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka is
an independent sovereign nation. Legislative power
is exercised by the unicameral parliament, elected
through universal franchise on a proportional representative
basis. According to the 1978 constitution the executive
president is the head of state and has the power to
dismiss the prime minister and the cabinet and dissolve
the parliament. The president as well as the parliament
is elected for 6 years. Minimum voting age is 18 years.
