Israel
/ Negev / History
The
Negev is part of an awe-inspiring desert that stretches
from Egypt through the southern part of Israel to
Jordan and Saudi Arabia. This is the wilderness where
man met God. Here Abraham communed with God, and centuries
later the prophet Elijah came to the Mountain of God
for a momentous encounter with the Creator. This,
in fact, is the region that gave birth to civilization
on the banks of the great rivers that surround the
desert, and in the oases on the fringes of the wilderness.
The
desert trails of the Negev were the conduits for knowledge,
culture and development. The Negev, a small area of
12,000 square kilometers, encompasses all the landforms
that make up a desert: desert flats, sand dunes, desert
pavements, cliff faces that stretch for dozens of
kilometers, deep canyons, and land-forms which are
unique to the Negev. Besides its natural history,
the Negev has a long and interesting human history,
from pre-historic hunters who roamed the area 10,000
years ago, through biblical times, the Nabateans,
the Romans, and more.
